Who the hell is Mafer Ochoa?

Get to know some of the brilliant minds behind our work. We’re chatting with members of the DixonBaxi studio about what makes them who they are. From the professional to the personal, nothing is off limits here. Introducing: Mafer, our Finance Manager who puts human connection at the heart of what she does.

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Mafer, the Finance Manager at DixonBaxi.

What’s your story?

Originally from Venezuela, I came to the UK to do a MA 12 years ago and life decided that this would be the place for me to grow and form a family.  I am a mum of 2 beautiful children and 2 beautiful pets.

Having always dealt with maths and numbers with ease, I was drawn to accountancy, although I worked as a Office/Studio manager for some years before deciding to focus on Finance. I am ACCA part-qualified, looking to graduate within the next couple of years.

I’ve always worked in services industries—banking, education, lettings, marketing/creative, business consultancy. But out of all those, I loved working in the creative industry the most.

What are you working on right now?

On a few different spreadsheets. 😂

"I think good design should be beautiful, functional, impactful, relatable and applicable."

Do you think design can change the world? How?

Yes, design has a functional and emotional impact in our everyday lives; it shapes the way we perceive everything around us.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

I would give more space for women to actually run it.

What’s the last song you listened to?

Feriado - Rawayana. Nominated as Best Pop Song at the Latin Grammys.

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you?

Even though I do what some consider ‘the boring part of the job’, I love being among creative people and being the point of connection between the beautiful work we do and the financial impact that work has in the growth of our business.

What’s your definition of good design?

I think good design should be beautiful, functional, impactful, relatable and applicable.
